Exam stress: How to get through them and then celebrate

Exams can be a stressful time for students! Photo: Rochelle Street.

Sometimes exams can be very overwhelming and the pressure will rise, so here are some tips to get through those long study days.

Study groups – Planning study sessions with people from your classes can help cover content you may not be as confident with. Our AUT Student Association (AUTSA) president, Dharyin Colbert, says this is the best way to study because it also reminds us that we are not alone and you can help each other relax and de-stress.

Change study locations – Being stuck in the same place for hours on end can be draining, so get up and try move locations throughout the day! If the weather is on your side, try studying at a park.

Study snacks – Study snacks are important to keep your mind fueled and to retain good energy.  According to Buzzfeed some of the best snacks for studying are bananas, hummus and veggies, berries. For all the millennials out there, avocado on toast is a great option!

Most importantly, HAVE BREAKS! – Feeling the pressure to study every second of the day is very common, but you need to remember to take breaks! Breaks allow you to refuel your mind and regain full focus. In the words of Dharyin, “It’s all about balance, right?”

Let’s celebrate!

What’s the best part about exams? Finishing them! So here are some ways to celebrate your hard (or not so hard) work.

Shadows Bar – The University of Auckland’s student bar is the perfect place to relax with your friends. Grab a drink and some food to kick-start a celebratory night marking the end of the semester. A night to remember – (or not).

Uptown bounce – Based in Grey Lynn, this trampoline park provides fitness classes that are all on trampolines! So, if exams have kept you back from the gym and you’re now in need of a fun adrenaline release to get you sweating those exam blues off, this the perfect place for you.

Music gigs – Pair up with your friends and go out for a night filled with music! Check out who’s performing at The Tuning Fork or Neck of The Woods, or if you fancy the sound of your own voice and might want to hit up K-Road’s Route 66 Karaoke Bar.

Roadie – Get your group of friends together and get out of the city madness! Venture as far away from University to the East Coast or even down to the South Island during the semester break. It will help you fully relax and prepare for (forget) second semester!

A final message from Dharyin, our student president, “You’ve been working hard all semester and now it’s time to go and live life, relax and be with your family.”
