Friday the 13th - have a good day

Tony Hull has no time for superstitions like those associated with Friday the 13th.

It's Friday the 13th. How's your day going?

AUT student Fergus Ross, 22-year-old, is worried that something will happen to him today. “I suppose I will blame [Friday 13th]. I mean I have an exam today, so it is probably a bad thing.”

The origins of superstitions surrounding Friday the 13th are hard to pin down, with some historians believing that the superstitious day arose around the 19th century.

AUT students had strongly opposing views around the day.

Communications student, Marc Everson didn’t believe in Friday the 13th in karma or luck or anything. “I’m not superstitious at all. I don’t believe anything to do with it.”

Twenty-one-year-old  Karuna Thawani had an opposite view. “I just checked my phone, and I was like okay, it’s the 13th… I’m superstitious in certain things. I believe if you play with scissors something bad will happen to you.”

Twenty-year-old Tyler Cunningham said: “I’m not superstitious, well not enough to stay home. I know to stay away from broken mirrors.”
