The gender discrepancy of Tinder’s consumers could be discouraging younger users from keeping the app.

A Dating App report released last month has shown that three quarters of Tinder users are men, and that globally, 35 per cent of all Tinder users are between the age of 18-24.

Users of different genders therefore have contrasting experiences with the app, according to a TWN poll.

Lauren, a 23-year-old female, would get 30 matches per month and only deleted Tinder because she met someone through the app.

In contrast, Sai, a male 18-year-old university student, says he deleted Tinder because there weren’t enough matches.

“I gave up eventually. I got a solid 10 [matches per month] minimum. Not enough for me though.”

Men may be less likely to get matches on Tinder due to the dominance of men on the app.

The low number of female users on the app could be due to the large amounts of harassment women face online.

According to New Zealand Family Violence Clearinghouse, 72 per cent of women under age 30 have experienced online harassment.

Three women, who wish to remain anonymous, say they deleted the app “because of the men on it”.

“Very creepy, it’s not worth it. There's one in 10 that’s decent, I realised I was just doing it more as a game.”

In the past 5 years New Zealand has seen a 65% decrease in monthly downloads of Tinder, leaving the future of the app uncertain.
