Post-lockdown hair salon surcharges are covering hygiene and PPE equipment - but in some cases being used to increase profit, says the industry's body.

And one Tauranga hairdresser agrees, saying some surcharges are “ripping people off”.

The NZ Association of Registered Hairdressers (NZARH) has recommended that if hairdressers’ costs have increased, it is fair for clients to contribute, says chairman Niq James.

But he says some businesses are using the opportunity to increase their profits.

One anonymous hairdressing business is charging an extra $15 to every service.

“I’ve actually seen cases where some people charge an extra $15 or $20 just because they’re really busy and they want to make more money and they’re saying that it’s because of the PPE,” said Mr James.

Surcharges of around $2 to cover the cost of clients’ PPE is understandable, with NZARH supplying its members with subsidised equipment, he said.

Another valid reason for extra costs is clients returning for hair colouring after lockdown, requiring more time and up to 15 grams more product than usual.

But Matua-based hairdresser Julie Tito says even with extra product she thinks colouring hair would cost salons at most $30, so she sees these increases as taking advantage of clients.

She says despite added costs from individual client capes, disposable gloves and neck towels, and cleaning equipment she hasn’t changed her prices.

“I haven’t charged for any of that stuff, it’s more important now I reckon not to be ripping people off,” says Ms Tito.

Mr James and his salon Headspace in Christchurch also haven’t added extra fees, but he says he could see that changing if PPE use continues to be a mainstay.
