This week has seen a flurry of activity for AUT, with the Auckland Covid-19 lockdown getting extended for another week until Sunday August 30 11:59pm. AUT campuses reopen on Monday August 31. In line with level 2 restrictions, all students and staff members are encouraged to wear face coverings and adhere to social distancing rules. Vice-Chancellor Derek McCormack has also confirmed QR codes will be used to enter every classroom for Covid-19 contact tracing purposes.

AUT Associate Professor of Law Khylee Quince has been appointed to the New Zealand Parole Board (NZPB). Quince, who is of Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Porou and Te Roroa descent, joins six new members who strengthen Māori and Pasifika representation on the New Zealand Parole board.

Lexus New Zealand has partnered with AUT in a move to support emerging design talent. The Lexus AUT design award competition aims to ensure AUT has strong local representation at the 2021 Lexus Design Award. Around 60 AUT Creative technologies students will spend the second semester working on their entries.

The AUT Live open weekend for prospective students will now be a series of online events held between 29 September – October 1. An on-campus event is scheduled for October 3.

AUT student Elle Temu won the 2020 ANZ Netball Championship with her team the Central Pulse. The Pulse, who are based in Wellington, overcame the Mainland Tactix 43-31 to secure back-to-back ANZ premierships.

All AUT Sport teams, trainings and games are on hold until further decisions have been made in-line with the Ministry of Health guidelines. AUT Sport will communicate with students once these decisions have been made to let their athletes know what the next steps are.

Current students Grace Freeman, Maiakawanakaulani Roos, Grace Kukutai, Daynah Nankivell, Joeannha Naime-Purcell and alumni Charmaine McMenamin who were all selected for the Auckland Rugby Farah Palmer squad for 2020. Farah Palmer Cup is the sole women's rugby competition in New Zealand. The competition consists of two divisions with teams from provincial unions around the country. The competition kicks off on Saturday.
