A sought-after upgrade to the intersection of Hollyford Drive and Aspiring Avenue in Manukau is set to improve traffic flow and enhance safety for drivers and pedestrians.

The newly installed traffic lights are a part of an Auckland Transport initiative aiming to better manage congestion and reduce the risks of accidents at one of the area's busiest intersections.

Damian Light, Chair of the Howick Local Board, says the traffic lights were designed to address specific safety concerns.

"Before the lights, people were often making risky turns into Aspiring Avenue, especially when waiting for a gap in the traffic," Light says.

"The lights now provide a safer and more controlled way to navigate this busy intersection."

The installation of the traffic lights aims to make commuting smoother and more predictable, particularly for residents travelling along Hollyford Drive.

Drivers often dealt with long waits at the intersection before the lights were installed, leading some to take chances by turning into oncoming traffic.

With the new system in place, the flow of traffic is managed better, and the lights are set to prioritise traffic during peak hours to ease congestion.

The traffic light installation has received positive feedback from the community.

A local Manukau resident says, "the Aspiring/Hollyford lights are working well, making it safer to turn right onto Hollyford."

One user commented on a community Facebook page post they “absolutely love it! Traffic flows perfectly.”

Not all feedback has been entirely positive, with some raising concerns about the increased traffic backing up onto nearby roads.

A local resident says that the "traffic builds up all the way back to Te Irirangi, so those turning right onto Hollyford are backing up traffic on Te Irirangi Drive, leading to some people blocking the intersection."

Light acknowledged the feedback, noting that Auckland Transport monitors the intersection after any major changes.

"We haven't heard of any major issues recently, but we are keeping an eye on it. If there are any adjustments needed, we’ll make those.”

Light also says the system includes sensors allowing for real-time adjustments to the traffic light timing, a feature that helps reduce delays and maintain a smoother flow.

The upgrade is generally considered a significant improvement for the local community.

Many are hopeful that further infrastructure projects, including the Mill Road development and improvements along Te Irirangi Drive, will continue to enhance traffic conditions in the wider area.
