A 21-year-old musician is creating an all-ages music venue to give young musicians the chance to perform.

The lack of age inclusive venues is a problem for young musicians and Ciara Bernstein is creating The Vault to give under 18’s a place to showcase their talent.

Ms Bernstein has been involved in the music scene from a young age and understands the frustrations young musicians experience trying to find a place to perform.

“When I was 17 and under, there was a really vibrant all ages [music] scene and venues that were putting on all-ages shows at the time.

“But there is just nothing like that left.”

Ms Bernstein is sacrificing her days off work, over 50 per cent of her weekly wages and moving house to afford rent while setting up the venue.

The costs involved to get the venue started includes sound proofing, music gear hire and furniture.

New Zealand Music manager, Lisa Jones, says there is a serious need for all-age venues because musicians who are under 18 are struggling to find places to perform.

The Vault is important as it’s a great way to encourage younger generations to get involved in New Zealand’s music scene says Ms Jones.

Ms Bernstein hopes to open the venue later this month once performances are locked in and sound proofing has been finished.

Jade Ross has known Ms Bernstein for eight years and has no doubts that she will successfully launch the all-age venue.

“I think she’s going to go super far.

“Before I even knew her she just had that personality about her,” says Ms Ross.

A give-a-little page has been set up for contributions to the costs of setting up The Vault.
