An Auckland artist is making waves overseas with her work being shown in a New York gallery this month.

Photographer Cathy Carter’s work explores the physical aspects of water, and in particular, looks at human vulnerability out in the elements.

“Water can be thought of as a space of ‘becoming made visible,’ an impermanent space, ephemeral and fluctuating.”

Ms Carter’s photographs are to be shown in New York’s contemporary fine-art Agora Gallery, in an exhibition titled Out From Down Under & Beyond: Fine Art from Australia & New Zealand.

The show started on May 20 and runs until June 9.

The exhibition features six artists and shows a survey of cutting-edge work, all from the other side of the world.

Of the five other artists on display in the Agora Gallery’s ‘Down Under’ exhibition, Ms Carter is the only artist from New Zealand.

Ms Carter said she is still at an early phase in her career, but the transition to showing overseas has been really exciting.

“The possibilities are enormous.

“It’s important for artists to consider the global market . . . New Zealand artists already have a strong reputation internationally, but any extension of this, through exhibitions like Agora’s, is a good thing for [our] industry.”

Ms Carter has just returned from Sydney, where she competed in the HeadOn Festival as a portrait finalist for the second year in a row.

As well as showing in New York, her work will also be exhibited in Paris later this year at the Moaroom, a showroom for New Zealand art in Europe.

“It’s great to be in a show like this, I’m proud to be an artist from Aotearoa.”
