The Government has threatened to ban Uber unless it follows rules around driver safety requirements.

Uber recently decided New Zealand drivers would no longer need a passenger (P) endorsement on their licence, which is usually issued after checks on drivers’ medical, criminal, behavioural and driving histories.

Uber was introduced to New Zealand in 2014 and is currently available in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. There are more than 1000 Uber drivers in Auckland and Wellington.

We sought the views of some Auckland tertiary students who use Uber.
