Former detective praises improved police counselling measures

A former South Auckland detective says our police force has bettered counselling methods and officers’ perception around putting their hands up for psychological help.

The mental health of front line police officers was traditionally brushed under the carpet.

Police face traumatic incidents that have been known to take a heavy toll and lead to mental illnesses such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in some instances.

Ex-top cop Neil Grimstone speaks to Te Waha Nui reporter Madison Reidy about the pressures of the job and mental health issues that can arise.
